Magilite, World Stones & Magical Potential?

Magilite, a substance present in all things with inherent magical power, and the World Stones, immensely powerful primordial objects preceding the creation of the world itself, are the sources of all magic in the world.

Magilite can be found in the earth, in trace amounts in the water and air, and inside all living things.

A creature’s magical potential (mana) is measured by the concentration of magilite in its blood.

While a creature’s magical potential is limited by how much magilite is in its blood, it is theoretically possible to absorb more magilite from the environment.

ClassConcentration (ng/L of blood)
Commoner0.1-9
Moderate10-99
High – Very High (Royal)100-9.99k (0.1-9.99μg)
Extremely gifted / High Royal10-999.999k (0.01-0.999mg)

Where does the energy come from, how?

The World Stones, as well as magilite, have an unfathomable amount of inherent energy, which can be harnessed through intense concentration and visualization.

Because magilite has so much inherent energy, it’s capable of creating permanent matter, which is why water (and other substances) created with magic don’t disappear.

Mechanism – Pathways & Magilite Plexus

To most people, the use of magic requires incredible skill and concentration, attainable only by few among thousands. Many spend their whole lives trying to awaken their magic, only to die never having tapped into their potential.

Before someone can use magic, their magic has to “awaken”. For someone to awaken their magic, it requires a psychomagical mechanism to click into place in their brain, involving an organ called the magilite plexus. This usually happens in a life-or-death situation which forces the brain to adapt by forming what’s called a “pathway”.

Magilite flows through this neural pathway, linking to various parts of the brain, such as the memories and cognitive functions, and connecting them to the persons inherent magical potential.

This pathway allows the user to harness their latent magical potential through visualization, to achieve their desired result.

This mechanism is exclusive to humanoids; other creatures have other mechanisms and organs to harness their magical potential, such as the ancient dragons with their magilite cores.

Element/Type

For humans, the element is determined by the magicampal synaptic pathway, which connects to the users memories.

The range of possible elements is limited by what the person believes to be possible, by the elemental focus of the surrounding environment, as well as by the users capacity for visualization.

Because the people of the water and fire empires (Lumare & Kaligo empires) are surrounded by depictions of water and fire their whole lives, and are taught that fire and water magic are the only elements possible, their default elements are water and fire.

As many millennia and centuries have passed, people all around the world have started to believe that water and fire magic are the only possible elements.

Limitations

For humanoids, using magic requires the activation of the magilite plexus, in other words, awakening ones magic.

While magic is practically free energy, using it recklessly and without control takes a large toll on the physical body, which can lead to passing out or even death.

Because of its physical toll, using magic accumulates large amounts bodily damage, which ages the body faster. To combat this, magic users have long vacations and periods of rest.

Some magic users are able to minimize the toll on their bodies through exceptional control and mastery over their magic. Only a handful of individuals have gone beyond this, completely stopping their aging.

If you use your magilite pathways continuously without allowing them to recharge, you can quite literally fry your brain with energy, leading to sudden death. The first signs of damage are a powerful headache and nosebleeds; continuing could be fatal.

Racial differences

Humans and elves are only capable of forming a single pathway, and so, are limited to a single element of magic. Dwarves completely lack a magilite plexus, making magic a physical impossibility for them.

The abscondita have a more evolved organ for magic, called the magilite polyplexus, which allows them to form multiple pathways, i.e. use multiple elements of magic at the same time.

Physical effect

Magilite is highly concentrated in the iris of the eye; when someone awakens their magic and their magicampal pathway connects to a certain element of magic, the crystalline structure of the iris’ magilite changes, altering the persons eye color.

By examining the eyes, one can both find out if someone has awakened their magic and the element they’ve awakened. The eyes will have a faint glow if you’ve awakened your magic, and are characterized by a color which corresponds to an element.

If somebody has not awakened their magic, they will simply have one of the common eye colors (brown, green, blue etc.) with no faint glow.
