Bullet Bird

The fastest animal in Andraril, the bullets of the skies

Threat Scale: Lower Boar

Description

The Bullet Bird is a small, blue-white feathered fish-eating bird, and is known as the fastest animal in all of Andaril, reaching top speeds that break the sound barrier (343 m/s or 1235 km/h). They use this immense speed to escape from their predators, competing directly with the Red Argent, the bullet of the ocean, the fastest fish in all of Andaril.

The bullet bird has the of the highest blood magilite concentration of any bird (50-100μg/L), and they use this magilite to reinforce their bones, feathers, and organs through a similar mechanism as Magistrength Enhancing. This reinforcement is required to withstand the immense pressures generated by their air pulses, their primary propulsion.

The bullet bird also has to close its eyes and airways for the full duration of their suprasonic flight, and they cannot change direction after blasting off. These are sacrifices that the bird makes for survival, as the bursts are predominantly used when the predatory fish (e.g., Red Argent) lunge at the birds from the water, and they do not use this top speed for more than a few seconds at a time.

The bullet bird has a base flight speed of over 150km/h, and boasts immense maneuverability when flying at slower speeds than that. It uses this speed to hunt for various small fish at saltwater coastlines.

While the bird isn’t known for its aggression, there are few reports of them accidentally hitting people when bursting blind from the water. The following impact has been found to be highly lethal.

Behaviour

The bullet bird is a cautious, shy bird, and does not like to be around people. It hunts near saltwater coasts by diving into the water, piercing fish with its needle-like beak. When a predator tries to lunge at them, they use their air bursts to shoot away from the threat at immense speeds.

The bullet bird lives most of their life near coastlines, but has been reported to migrate hundreds of kilometers to breed.

Diet

Feeds on small to medium saltwater fish.
