Magic Disease

A parasitic disease in which the body’s magilite is consumed, often leading to death within just a few days.

Prevalence: Extremely rare (1:500,000)

Lethality: 100% lethal (3 days to 3 months, depending on magical potential)

Description

A disease in which the body’s magilite is consumed by a parasite (mana leech), starting with the magilite in the blood, and ending with the magilite in various organs, especially the brain, which ultimately results in death.

Because most people have very little magical potential, the mana leeches quickly transition to consuming brain and organ matter, quickly resulting in death.

Symptoms

Physical weakness, severe exhaustion, and the inability to use any form of magic. Later symptoms include cognitive decline and severe organ failure.

Mechanism

Initially, as the parasite consumes magilite from the blood, it’s difficult to notice its effects, other than the magical output being weaker (due to less readily available magilite in the blood).

When the mana leeches start consuming organ and brain matter to absorb the magilite that has been accumulated there, that is what leads to severe complications and death.

Misc

The most famous person with magic disease was none other than Lumare himself, the founder of the Lumare Empire. While the average person with magic disease usually dies in just three days, Lumare‘s incredible magical potential kept him alive for over three years, as the mana leeches kept consuming the magilite in his blood bit by bit.

Mana Leeches

Mana leeches are drawn to high concentrations of magilite, i.e. that of biological organisms. This also means that people with a higher magical potential are more at risk of being infected.

It is currently unknown how mana leeches get into the body, as well as how they reproduce, and if they are contagious.
