Greater Black Drake

Threat Scale: Upper Minotaur

Description

The greater black drakes are much larger than atumna drakes, but also lack the magical abilities of ancient elemental drakes. The only reason that atumna drakes are more prevalent than black drakes is due to their much faster reproductive cycles.

Much like the smaller atumna drakes, greater black drakes are known for their pride and determination; they will simply not stop hunting their prey no matter what. The common saying, “Determined like a drake”, is also attributed to the black drakes.

Behaviour

Being at the top of the mountains’ food chain makes these intelligent creatures very proud.

Unlike the atumna drakes, greater black drakes have much thicker hide and so do not need to hibernate during the winter to conserve energy. Instead of simply curling themselves around their eggs, greater black drakes take a more active role in protecting their eggs (later their hatchlings), roaming the nearby mountains during winter/spring, looking for potential threats and eliminating them.

Because of their size and aggressively, atumna drakes try their best to avoid the territory of the black drakes.

Diet

Because of their size, greater black drakes usually prey on alba sheep, even mountain trolls and the smaller atumna drakes. They will however not pass up a snack-sized mountain orc or human either.

Misc

Because of their sparse populations and slow reproductive cycles (and the danger of confronting them), their populations aren’t as tightly controlled as the atumna drakes’. If they do cause trouble, Captains and Commanders are usually tasked with taking them down.
