Description
The pink glowfish is a deep-sea, semi-translucent pink fish with glowing blue and pink bioluminescence. It uses its large forward-facing eyes to perceive single photons in the pitch-black darkness.
Behaviour
The pink glowfish drifts through the darkness in massive schools of hundreds to thousands, looking like shimmering, ethereal clouds of pink and blue.
They live 400-2000 meters below sea level, which makes their breathtaking glow a sight humanity rarely, if ever, witnesses.
As red/pink light has the shortest penetration wavelength underwater, the pink glow acts paradoxically like a form of optical camouflage against predators that only see in the blue/green spectra, while the schools use their own glow to maintain coordination.
Diet
The pink glowfish eats deep-sea zooplankton, copepods (tiny crustaceans), marine snow, and krill.
Misc
A specimen that got caught in a fisherman’s net once sold for 3 ALU (30,000€) to a renowned Lumare marine biologist, and now sits preserved in a jar at the Lux Lumare Academy biology wing.
