Description
Parasitic species of mice that feed off the blood of sleeping animals.
Because of the enzymes in their saliva, the blood of their victims doesn’t coagulate, and the bite has a high risk of getting infected.
Because they go out of their way to bite their victims, vampire mice are known to spread disease, sometimes being called pestilence mice.
Behaviour
Vampire mice are fully nocturnal masters of stalking. Vampire mice stalk various creatures from deer to humans, learning their patterns and waiting for them to go to sleep.
Once their victim goes to sleep, vampire mice approach any areas with open skin. They begin by licking the area, numbing the skin because of the enzymes in their saliva; this prevents the creature from waking up from the pain of being bitten. The vampire mice then puncture the flesh, sucking as much blood as they can before scurrying away into the darkness.
Female vampire mice are known to keep some blood in their mouth to feed to their young once they reach their nest.
The horned vampire mouse’s horns primarily serve as an aid in digging through dirt and protecting themselves from other vampire mice.
