Flarestone Bomb

High-powered explosive device made of volatile flarestone.

Description

Flarestone bombs or grenades are high-explosive handheld devices, meant to be used to take down castle walls or multiple enemy soldiers at once. They are only really used by elite soldiers because of their volatility and the cost associated with creating them.

There are different sizes of flarestone bombs (5g, 10g, 25g, 50g, 100g), each size growing more and more dangerous and expensive.

Mechanics

A flarestone bomb consists of four main parts (casing, trigger button, iridium strikers, flarestone core), which each have to be precisely manufactured and calibrated to avoid accidental discharge.

The bomb is encased in a layer of metal, through which you can generally test if the flarestone is still active by feeling if it is warm to the touch. A cold casing would mean that the flarestone has been depleted, i.e. the grenade is too old to be used.

On the casing is a small metal trigger, which when pressed, readies the ten iridium strikers to activate the bomb.

The 10 iridium strikers are positioned all around the bomb; these strikers will activate the flarestone core upon sufficient physical impact, i.e. when the bomb hits something after it is thrown.

There are also variants with a fuse. This variant is significantly newer, and doesn’t require the physical impact of its predecessor.

Once the flarestone core activates, it releases all of the infused magical energy in a high-powered explosion, similar in power to many Captains’ or Commanders’ magical output.

The effect and power of the explosion varies depending on the magical element that has been infused into the flarestone.

Generally, a 10 gram flarestone bomb has the equivalent latent kinetic energy of 50 grams of TNT. This also implies that flarestone is five times more powerful than TNT.

Use

Used by highly skilled military personnel (Elite- and Chosen Warriors), to take down stone castle walls, dangerous creatures such as trolls, or multiple enemy soldiers at once.

Misc

A single flarestone bomb costs as much as 2 ALU (20,000€).

The Lumare Empire have water-magic-based flarestone bombs, whereas the Kaligo Empire uses fire-magic-based flarestone bombs.
