“Foot-jaw”, a rainforest ambush predator the size of a pike
Description
A riverbed ambush predator that looks remarkably like the offspring of a crocodile and a fish. Luckily, the crocfish only grows to around the size of a pike, making it non-lethal to humans, even if its needle-like teeth are a nasty hazard for anyone trudging through rivers.
The crocfish has a flat, reptilian body with sharp spines on its back, and fan-like fins in place of legs.
Behaviour
The crocfish spends almost all of its time absolutely still on the bottom of warm riverbeds (most often found in the rainforests of the Emerald Enclave), waiting for prey to swim in front before striking with lightning-fast speed.
Unfortunately, the crocfish doesn’t have very good eyes, so a foot stepping near its face (or, God forbid, stepping on it) receives the wrath of their jaws. This foot-biting habit of theirs has earned them the common name “Foot-jaw”, and the cautious hatred of anyone who’s had the pleasure of experiencing their bite.
Diet
The crocfish eats anything small and unfortunate enough to swim near it, including small fish, amphibians, and even small snakes. Because it sits at the bottom of rivers, it never really targets mammals swimming on the surface.
Misc
For some reason, the crocfish tastes absolutely horrid, like meat flavored with rusty nails and chalk. Thus, the crocfish is entirely avoided as a food source, unless you’re REALLY desperate.
